How to Find Your Tattoo Idea - and bring it to Life?

You want a tattoo, but don’t really know what yet? That’s totally fine. There are simple ways to develop a strong idea – even if you're starting from scratch.

1. Personal or just beautiful?

First, ask yourself: Do you want something personal with a story behind it? Or are you just looking for something cool, fun, or visually striking? If you’re going for meaning, take a moment to reflect: Which experiences or moments shaped you? What values, people, or turning points matter to you?
Often, a strong idea is already there – it just needs the right spark.

2. Get inspired

Now, start collecting visual ideas. Browse Pinterest, Google, or Instagram. Enter keywords that fit your theme, vibe, or emotion. Save anything that catches your eye – style, topic, color, linework, feeling. It doesn’t need to make sense yet. Just build a mood board.

3. From feeling to design

From here, you can try to form your own concept – or just bring your collection to us. We’ll help you shape it into a custom design that really fits you. You don’t need to explain everything perfectly – we’ll get the idea.

HowMuch

How much does a Tattoo cost?

It’s the most common – and most complicated – question.
We aim to keep our pricing as transparent and fair as possible.
Every tattoo and every client is unique, but with years of experience, we’re able to accurately estimate the effort and offer you fair, fixed prices.
Find all details on our Pricing Page.

Booking

Booking your Tattoo Appointment

Once you're ready and we've discussed all the details, we'll schedule your tattoo appointment.
We'll agree on a time together – it doesn't have to be during regular opening hours. Just let us know what works best for you, and we'll find a time that suits both of us.

One important thing: show up well-rested, relaxed, and ready. That way, the experience will be smooth and enjoyable for both sides.

Why we ask for a Deposit

To confirm your tattoo appointment, we require a deposit. This amount will be credited toward the final price of your tattoo.

Why is it important?
A tattoo session is more than just a time slot. We reserve the day just for you, turn away other clients, and prepare thoroughly—mentally, physically, and artistically.

If you cancel on short notice or don’t show up, that time and effort is already invested. That’s why the deposit is kept as compensation in such cases—especially for cancellations made less than 12 hours before the appointment.

Thanks for your understanding and fairness.

Prepare

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Getting a tattoo is physically demanding. Depending on the session length, your body will be put to the test.

Yes, tattoos hurt. Pain causes stress, and stress drains your energy. You might not always be in the most comfortable position either – your artist needs optimal access to do their best work. On top of that, your body sees the tattoo ink as an invader, triggering a stress response.

So help your body cope – arrive well-prepared and in top shape:

  • Get a good night’s sleep

  • Eat well beforehand – quality food matters

  • Stay hydrated

  • No drugs, no alcohol

  • No painkillers

Also, wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained – ink splashes can happen, and they won’t wash out.

Bring snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during longer sessions.

And remember:
A rested, well-nourished body feels less pain.

What to Expect

Your first tattoo can feel like a big step — and it's completely normal to feel a little nervous. At HERZ Tattoo, we’re here to guide you through the entire process and make sure you feel safe, confident, and well cared for.

If you’d like, you can start with a free consultation.

We’ll take the time to explain everything:
– How to prepare for your appointment
– What will happen during the session
– How to care for your fresh tattoo afterwards
– And what our next steps will be

We’ll talk about the design, the placement, and the materials we use. You'll see exactly what equipment, needles, inks, and hygiene procedures are involved — before we start.

If you have any questions, just ask — no question is too small.

And don’t worry if you’re afraid of needles: tattoo needles don’t go through the skin like injections. Instead, they work only in the second layer of your skin. It doesn’t feel like a jab — more like a strong scratch. And yes, we’ll walk you through everything step by step so you’ll never be surprised.

At every stage, you're in control.
We’re here for you — and you can always share your thoughts or concerns at any time.

Howwework

How we work

At HERZ Tattoo, we work exclusively with certified, approved, and high-quality materials. We don’t just meet hygiene standards — we exceed them.

Everything is prepared with the highest level of care, so there’s no need to worry. And if you do have questions about any product, tool, or process, just ask — we’re happy to explain.

The tattoo session itself is a moment of calm focus. Your artist will be fully concentrated on creating the best possible result for you, and your comfort is just as important. That’s why we review the full process with you before we begin:
– How the session will go
– How you’ll need to sit or lie down
– What you should expect during and after

If you ever need a break or have a question during the session, don’t hesitate to speak up. There’s no shame in taking a break, and there's nothing you can do wrong. Just share your needs openly — we want this experience to be as pleasant and relaxed as possible.

You’re also welcome to bring something to keep your mind occupied — your phone, headphones, a book, or even a friend to hold your hand. That’s absolutely fine.

Throughout the session, your artist will keep you informed:
– You’ll see the tools and needles used
– You’ll be guided clearly through each step
– You’ll receive aftercare instructions to take home

No questions will be left unanswered. You’ll feel fully informed and in good hands — before, during, and after your tattoo.

Howbesure

How can I be sure?

Getting your first tattoo is a big step, and it's normal to feel unsure. So here are two important questions – and our honest answers.

1. How can I be sure about the tattoo itself?
If it feels right, it is right.
If you're still unsure, wait.

But if the idea of getting a tattoo keeps coming back to you — if it fascinates you and feels meaningful — then stay with that thought.
Think about how it would look on you. Picture it in the mirror.
At some point, you'll feel it: Now is the right time.

That’s when you come to us with your idea. We’ll help you shape it into something perfect — and make it an experience to remember.

2. How can I be sure this is the right studio?
We can't tell you if we are the right place for you.
But again: trust your feeling.

Look at our work, explore how we communicate, and ask yourself — do I feel safe, understood, and welcome?

You’re always invited to visit our studio, get a feel for the atmosphere, and talk to us — no strings attached.
And if it feels right, we’ll be here, ready to make your first tattoo something truly special.

Skintypes

Skin Types

Every skin is different — dry, oily, or mixed — and each requires an individual approach during tattooing and healing. Thanks to our experience, we can recognize your skin type and adjust our technique and aftercare to suit your needs.

Skin tone also plays an important role in tattooing. Light skin provides the strongest contrast and is ideal for detailed designs. With very dark skin, however, the pigments are often far less visible — especially over time. This makes it difficult to achieve the results you might expect from tattoos commonly shown in references.

In addition, darker skin types often react more sensitively to tattooing. The skin may scar more easily, and raised or textured healing (hypertrophic scarring) is more common. To avoid this, the tattoo must be applied with special care and minimal trauma — but this conflicts with the goal of achieving bold contrast and strong visibility. This technical contradiction makes it extremely difficult for the artist to deliver satisfying results, and the experience is often not ideal for the client either.

We believe a tattoo should be clearly visible, long-lasting, and worth the investment — both emotionally and financially. That’s why we may advise against tattooing very dark skin in some cases — not out of exclusion, but out of honesty and responsibility. We’re happy to have an open conversation and give you professional feedback based on your individual situation.

Not Every Spot Is Tattoo-Friendly

Some areas of the body simply don’t hold ink as well as others. Hands, fingers, feet, elbows, knees, neck, and even parts of the face are under constant use and friction. That means the skin renews faster and tattoo ink can fade more quickly or even disappear during healing.

It’s very individual — some tattoos in these areas heal just fine, others don’t. But what you should know: tattoos in these spots often need touch-ups, sometimes even more than once.

We offer one free touch-up if needed, but if a tattoo requires multiple sessions to fix, especially due to difficult placement or poor aftercare, we’ll need to charge for the extra time and materials.

Please feel free to ask us if your tattoo idea involves one of these tricky areas — we’re happy to advise you honestly.

Ethical Responsibility

We’re not generally against face, neck, or hand tattoos. In some cases, they make perfect sense and truly suit someone’s personality and lifestyle — and if that’s the case, we’re happy to do it.

But we also believe in responsible tattooing. These tattoos are highly visible and can have a lasting impact on how you’re perceived, socially and professionally. That’s why we reserve the right to decide on a case-by-case basis whether we feel comfortable doing them.

If we feel that a visible tattoo might not be the right choice for you, we’ll be honest and talk it through with you. We want every tattoo to be meaningful — and something you can carry with confidence.

Medicaton

Medication

Some medications — especially those that affect blood thinning, the cardiovascular system, or the immune response — can influence the tattooing process and healing. If you’re taking any medication, please let us know. Your tattoo artist needs to be aware to ensure your safety.

When in doubt, it’s always best to ask your doctor whether getting a tattoo is safe while on your current medication. And don’t worry — there’s no judgment. We simply want to make sure everything goes smoothly and safely for you.

Medical

Medical Conditions

Your health matters — to you and to us.

For safety reasons, we do NOT tattoo clients with contagious diseases such as hepatitis or HIV. This is not a question of discrimination, but of protecting the health of our artists and all other clients. Please be honest and inform us in advance if this applies to you.

If you have any other medical conditions that could affect your ability to get tattooed (for example, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, skin conditions, or heart issues), please consult your doctor beforehand. And always let your artist know.

The more we know, the better we can take care of you — safely and respectfully.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, we kindly ask you to wait.
During pregnancy, your body goes through major hormonal changes — and those shifts can last for months after birth. Your skin and immune system may react differently, and tattooing can place additional stress on your body.

That stress, along with the pain and the body’s immune response to tattoo pigments, affects not only you, but also your baby.

For these reasons, we do not tattoo during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Take your time, care for your body and your child — and come see us when you've weaned and your system has fully recovered. We’ll be here for you.

TATTOO-

TIME

Your Tattoo Appointment

What to expect and how to prepare

Show up relaxed, well-rested, and well-fed. No alcohol, no drugs, and no painkillers before your appointment – they can interfere with the process. If you come in fit and fueled, you’ll likely feel less pain, last longer, and enjoy the experience more.

Wear clothes that can get stained. Tattoo ink might leave marks – and those won’t wash out.

Bring something to keep you entertained. Your artist needs to concentrate and can't talk you through the whole session. Distraction helps! A smartphone, tablet, or book is perfect.

You're welcome to bring one friend or partner to hold your hand or keep you company – but please, no crowds. Too many people create unnecessary stress and distraction, for you and your artist. Let’s keep the vibe calm and focused.

Give yourself enough time. Tattooing isn’t an exact science – things can take longer than expected. Your skin might react differently, or you might need breaks. That’s totally fine. Just let us know – breaks aren’t a weakness.

After the session, we’ll walk you through all the aftercare instructions. So no need to worry.

In short: come relaxed, bring time, stay chill – and you'll have a great experience.

Pain

PAIN - What if it hurts too much?

Yes, tattoos involve pain. But don’t worry – most people handle it well, even over several hours. Usually, the longer the session, the more challenging it gets.

So if you're unsure how your body reacts, start with a short session instead of booking a full day.

2 to 3 hours are manageable for almost everyone, even with low pain tolerance. Especially at the beginning, tattoo pain is usually easy to handle.

Some areas hurt more than others – your artist will let you know what to expect. And if the pain becomes too much, you can always take a break or stop. That’s totally okay and nothing to be ashamed of.

To make it easier: come well-rested, eat properly, and avoid stress. A fit body can handle pain much better.

Reschedul

Rescheduling Your Appointment

We understand that life can change. If you need to reschedule, no problem — just let us know as early as possible so we can adjust our schedule. For very short notice changes (less than 24 hours before), we have to keep your deposit, as time and preparation have already been invested. Thank you for your understanding.

Canceling Your Appointment

Cancellations happen — that’s life. Simply inform us at least 24 hours in advance and everything is fine. If you cancel later or don’t show up, we can’t fill the time slot, and we must retain your deposit as compensation for our preparation and lost time. Thank you for being fair — we look forward to seeing you in the studio!

Aftercare

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

Aftercare Instructions:

Your tattoo artist has explained your aftercare routine and given you written instructions after the session. If you’ve lost them, feel free to stop by the studio – we’re happy to give you a new copy. Meanwhile, here are the most important points in a quick overview:

Bandage / Tattoo Cover

If your tattoo was covered, your artist explained how long to keep it on.

  • If it’s standard foil (plastic wrap), you can remove it once you’re home.

  • If it’s a tattoo wound dressing (like Dermalize), it should ideally stay on for at least the first night – up to 3–5 days if possible. If it comes off earlier on its own, that’s also okay.

Cleaning

Wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap. Pat dry with a clean towel – do not rub.

Moisturizing

Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream as recommended by your artist. Don’t overdo it – the skin needs to breathe.

Healing Time

A tattoo needs 4–6 weeks to fully heal. Even if it looks good on the surface after 1–2 weeks, the deeper layers are still regenerating.

What to Avoid

  • No direct sun or tanning beds during healing

  • No swimming, soaking, or sauna

  • No scratching or picking

  • No tight or dirty clothes rubbing against the tattoo

Healing

The Healing Process

A tattoo is essentially a skin injury – similar to a scrape. The ink is placed into the middle layer of your skin (the dermis), and your body responds with a natural healing process.

In the first few days, your skin forms a protective layer (like light scabbing or dryness). Itching, tightness, or a bit of fluid is totally normal.

After about 7–14 days, the outer layer will start peeling - never scratch or pick at it! What you see is just the surface healing.

Full healing takes around 4 to 6 weeks. That’s how long your body needs to stabilize the ink, rebuild the skin, and fully regenerate.

Important:

Proper aftercare protects your tattoo from infection, fading, and scarring. The better you care for it, the better and longer it will look.

Infection

What if it gets infected?

If you follow the aftercare instructions and keep your tattoo clean, infections are rare. But if it does happen — don’t panic. The key is to stay calm, keep it clean, and monitor the situation.

If you notice unusual redness, warmth, throbbing pain, or discharge, act early. Mild irritation can often be managed by gently cleaning the area and applying an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory ointment. Ask your pharmacist for advice.

If the symptoms worsen or you feel unsure, come by the studio or speak to your doctor. Early action is the best protection.

Touchup

Do i Need a Touch-Up?

You might have heard that good tattoos never need a touch-up – but that’s not entirely true. While skilled technique helps reduce the chance of needing one, several other factors play a role: the body part, your skin type, how you care for your tattoo, and even how your body heals.

Some areas like fingers, feet, or joints are more prone to fading due to high friction and skin regeneration. In contrast, other spots tend to heal more solidly.

Whether a touch-up is needed can only be judged after full healing – usually after six weeks. If something needs a boost, your artist will gladly take a look and advise you. Touch-ups are part of the process and nothing to worry about.
